EDITORIAL TOP TEN POLL
This year, 24fps decided to take a poll of its contributors and put the composite list of favorite films up. The lists contributed for this purpose might have varied from the official ones published here, mostly for reasons of eligibility (which are stricter in this section). Here is the final ten:1.
The Son (Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Belgium)
2. Talk to Her (Pedro Almodóvar, Spain)
3. Ten (Abbas Kiarostami, Iran/France)
4. 25th Hour (Spike Lee, USA)
5. Femme Fatale (Brian De Palma, USA/France)
6. Turning Gate (Hong Sang-soo, South Korea)
7. Unknown Pleasures (Jia Zhang Ke, China)
8. Gangs of New York (Martin Scorsese, USA)
9. Blissfully Yours (Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Thailand)
10. Irreversible (Gaspar Noé, France)
Just
missed the list: Friday Night (Claire Denis, France), The
Uncertainty Principle (Manoel de Oliveira, Portugal), All or Nothing (Mike
Leigh, UK), Chicago (Rob Marshall, USA), Russian Ark (Alexander
Sokurov, Russia).
Other idiosyncracies: The year's most critically acclaimed film in
America, Far from Heaven, ends up closer to #20 than #1. Michael
Almereyda's Happy Here and Now actually ranks as the highest unreleased
American film (and higher than Far from Heaven). No one had a first
place film that did not eventually receive additional votes.
